Edited to include the ATWR Map.

-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-

thought it best to bring it into its own thread

thanks to bnz433 for stimulating my thoughts ( us flocking relay)

thanks for the positive comments re the oval

my thinking is going off towards maybe a trio of ovals circumnavigating

why?

well while the oval is floating about the UK, or the US, or where ever its a bit dull for those in other lands who might not get to contribute for some concievable time
it can only be in 1 place at a time
kinda think it could be more exciting with three... would the three ever meet up etc
while one is lingering another could be contributing
birdy could have a new map with progress travelled lines

could have a red version, blue version and black version

could have them starting in different countries.

Hi Zolti,

I imagine it might be a bit a bit of a push, but it'd be great to kick one off with our Aussie Flocking at Tumbarumba. We could get it to cross this wide, brown land - from East to West, and get it sent on to the next continent.

Just a thought.

Was curious how long it'd take to cross any waters, too, so great thinking on dispatching 3 of 'em. As for the US "launch", i'm fine with it starting anywhere. I don't have any real need to be the initiator....just as long as I get my grubby mitts on it this riding season

Main intent of this, as others have mentioned, is that it's to drive us to get some smaller flockings to together. Would rather it not make some 1500 mile journey in the pannier of 1 guy on his bike. Unless, that is, he's meeting up with many others along the way.

I'm just excited that ya'll are gonna give this a go! Can't wait to get started and see the progress. BTW - RULE #1, we gotta start this before the RAT does something similar!!!!

Just copied this over from the US Relay thread - just want to make sure the information applies to both...

What do I think?
I agree to everything!

Actually - When back reading I came up with some ideas myself. Such as a Swiss ex-military ~ lovely thick leather ~ map holder/pouch!
I usually carry a 'log/drawing book' in there. It may hold both the batton and a book!?
Here a picture I found on the tinterweb:

I'll photograph it this evening in my hands so you get an idea of its size.
If it good and you decide to use this idea - I'll get another 3 pouches (my contribution) and forward them onto you Zolti!?

Regarding the GOOGLE MAP - I can set-up some maps - maybe give the organizer and one or two more the log-in details so it remains up-to-date.

Zolti

How soon could you make up three discs?

I don't wish to put undue pressure on someone who has voluntered but I wonder could you have one done for the Peak District Flocking, another for the Tumbarumba Flocking and one available before Kevin starts his epic ride from the west to east coast of the US. (Not sure when that is?)

If we have one for each geographic area we could leave it up to the first people in each area to come up with an appropriate book and packaging? I like both Thatchs' leather cover and Birdys' map case, no doubt we could take weeks to decide.

I also like the idea of the three plaques/books. I might make it my ambition to get my name in all three.

If we can get these organised at such short notice, I'm sure there will be no shortage of volunteers to take the first deliveries.

If this isn't practical or convenient we can always start the relays at a later date.

Frank

OK - here's a home-made shitty video of those lovely ex-military swiss leather cases (these are from 1972 and 1969):
Sorry I couldn't judge where the center of focus was...

Soooo, how do I get one of those??? Any thoughts of marketing them Birdy??

Oh, by the way they would do just fine for the relay - I'm just not sure that I wouldn't want to keep the case and send the book on in a plastic bag

ok

After 2.5 hours of playing about and 4 drafts I have a 3D finished example for your perusal, maybe even the first one done if it passes

the white ATWR lettering is kiss cut and infilled with paint. I tried different colours on other pieces like red but they lacked impact so I suggest we keep white

i looked at rastering for the tb1600.com and infilling but the initial powerup on hte rastering run left a slight unpolished edge and I couldnt successfully infill without overspill into the atwr letering ( option for colour change). to overcom this I have returned to kiss cut with infill to match the edge lettering ( i did try other combos but this is the most successful to date. there are other operating options but none gave me the effect or involved more work)

the discs look cheap in other colours (I had considered cutting three colours and using the spare cut darts as solid infills)
therefore I propose a black disc for the background this option also will provide a greater impact with the lettering.

So ....to get other colours in I decided to use the dart and tbird lettering to give the alternative bird colouring ( this one shoudl keep mat1600 happy )
the next could be red

if its ok it could be in circulation fairly quickly - triumph have an open day here in the north east tomorrow, could be a good start, anyone going that could take it south?

Spot on Rob. Great colours.

We now need a circulation plan and get the log book thing sorted. Anything to get it going, the pouch/holder can be introduced on the way round if someone wants to add it in.
If all are agreed, I think Rob should start it off with an entry and a pic. If it gets down here it will get on the Peak District bash and then on to Scotland. A bit further down the line it will see the Bloc tour and Frank can get it over to Aus. Hopefully it should get a good tour of Aus until someone there gets a trip to the US. I plan to go to the US next year and would love to meet up with it if poss.

Just a thought.

Wild ambitious idea, probably wont work but i'll float it anyway................

If Matt can bring one down to the Peak district Flocking, and if Gonzo were around to take it to OZ with him....could it conceivably make it to Tumbarumba..........two flockings in one month would be a good start?

just been back tracking, pouches look sturdy and very functional - great suggestion birdy
looks like the first disc/baton is ok and will be on its way soon, who knows where, not sure about where you would send the pouch to for that one.
it you wait long enough it should come to you - maybe on the thunder tour?

Regarding the leather cases, you'll have to wait a couple of Weeks... I went to the military shop and it had a nice sign saying that during winter they are closed.
Will open in April ~ then I'll get a couple and post on or wait...

Ok - I have the relay plaque. I am going to see if I can get hold of a note book to go with it. Actually came home with one from Tesco - £1.08 - Mrs1600 looked at me pityful and has ordered me to get a properly bound and stitched book

So thanks to Rob (zolti), who should have had the first entry, the relay has kicked off. I shall start it off and hand it over to the next person - probs at the Peak run. I understand that Gonzo will be showing up for a quick visit to the Peak run so it would be a good oportunity to have it cross the world with him. Frank is coming over in June so it would get chance to come back again to be passed on around England. If Lee (Birdy) should find himself in Yorkshire it could get over to Euroland - in the hope that Thatch could transfer it to our friends over the Atlantic.
However it goes, it would need people to contribute to this thread with any travel plans they may have - in the hope of never having to send it by mail. The above is only an idea of how it may get started - it doesn't matter as long as it is in the hands of a TBird rider and will be passed on at some point.
Naturally this is open to any points people have - I was just trying to get it going as there doesn't seem to be much going on on this thread.

Well Done Matt. Thanks

Like I said earlier we will certainly get it travelling around Aus when it gets here.

After Tumbarumba we could get the relay to Queensland quite easily or even Perth in WA.
We have a few members over there that often can't get East to a Flocking so we could perhaps get them to organise a mini Flocking in Perth to sign the relay book?
That would fulfill the primary function of the relay, to promote gatherings of T/Birds.

Getting the relay back East before I head to the UK in June may be a problem though. Perth is a long way from anywhere and the road over isn't paricularly scenic or a great bike riding experience.

We will do what has to be done, even if the relay has to be posted.

Thank your wife for the rest of us, the book will need to be robust to say the least. Thanks also to Zolti for the great plaque.

Regards Frank

And you will get your hands on it. Hopefully it should get people out and about and make an effort to join up and meet to pass it on.
Will be good to see if we can reach our Argentina friend and other other far reaching bird riders.
